We are thrilled to announce that the European Union is acceding to the Istanbul Convention, reaffirming its commitment to combatting gender-based violence. This groundbreaking development gives us renewed hope and highlights the urgency of our mission with the End GBV in VET and the #Cancel GBV in VET projects.

What is the Istanbul Convention?
The Istanbul Convention, officially known as the Council of Europe Convention on preventing and combating violence against women and domestic violence, is a comprehensive legal framework aimed at protecting women from all forms of violence, and to prevent, prosecute and eliminate violence against women and domestic violence.

AKMI is a partner to the EU funded projects End GBV in VET and #Cancel GBV in Basket, both aiming to combat GBV phenomena in Vocational Education and Training Institutes and the sports sector respectively while at the same time re-affirming a strong priority towards gender equality and the need for creation of safe spaces in both sectors.

What is the End GBV in VET project?

End GBV in VET is a collaborative initiative aimed at eradicating gender-based violence in vocational education and training programs. We firmly believe that everyone deserves a safe and inclusive learning environment, free from any form of violence or discrimination.

What is the #Cancel GBV in Basket project?

#Cancel GBV in Basket intents to combat GVB and discrimination in basketball, so as to eliminate each form of gender-based discrimination and prejudice in the field of basketball, through the provision of an upskilling curriculum to coaches, empowerment activities to athletes, as well as a case management system that will be established in basketball

Why is the EU Commission’s entry into the Istanbul Convention significant?

The Istanbul Convention is a milestone agreement that seeks to prevent and combat violence against women and domestic violence. With the EU Commission joining this crucial framework, it sends a powerful message that gender-based violence will not be tolerated within the European Union.
