RETOURN
Natural disasters such as earthquakes, tsunamis, hurricanes, floods, and pandemics such as the one caused by COVID-19, are uncertain and lasting events that negatively affect tourism, while the tourism sector is particularly vulnerable to natural disasters due to the lack of adequate preparation and knowledge. The RETOURN project (REcovery TOURism after Natural disaster) involves a heterogeneous and representative partnership of Chambers of Commerce, VET providers, Universities, and Associations, from 5 EU Member States, in order to respond to the lack of preparation and adequate knowledge by the figures operating in the tourism sector in relation to risk management and the recovery of damage resulting from natural disasters.
Objectives of the project
- Creation of a Competence framework for the Tourism
- Planning and commissioning a system of the “Recovery Tourism after Natural Disaster” training course on tourism disaster management and restoration of the tourist image after a natural disaster in the tourism sector;
- Creation of stable links between entities of the training, businesses, and territories, creating systems of relationships in which the sharing of knowledge, experiences, and reflections favor the co-creation of value and European-level relational capital;
- Promotion of a participatory approach in planning the reconversion/restructuring after a natural disaster;
- Increase of the n. of personnel employed in disaster-affected areas through employment or re-employment in the training course;
- Help tourism businesses to cope with and survive the recovery period;
- Reconversion of the tourist image of the affected areas and greater use of risk management plans.
Expected Results
The RETOURN projects entails four Project Results:
PR1 → Creation of the Competence Framework for Tourism Recovery Expert
PR2 → Design of the structure of the new interdisciplinary teaching in Recovery Tourism after Natural Disaster and Elaboration of the contents of the Open Educational Resources:
The partnership will design the structure of the training program and will process the contents in the form of Open Educational Resources, integrating the training materials with good practices and case studies developed for the management of post-natural disaster emergencies.
PR3 → Creation of online di platform and Open Research Resources:
The objective is the development of an e-learning platform and contents so that professional tourism operators, teachers of vocational schools and other educators can enhance their specific skills.
PR4 → Piloting of the new training program, experiential lab and SWOT analysis post-natural disaster:
Due to the innovative nature of the training course, this will be tested on a panel of 65 individuals who operate in the tourism sector or who lead companies and associations in the tourism professions, as operators and tourism managers.
Project Activities
The aim of the project is to structure, implement, test, and disseminate the “Recovery Tourism after Natural Disaster” training program, centered on tourism disaster management and on the restoration of the tourist image after the advent of a natural disaster.
This path will consist of:
- Face-to-face teaching sessions;
- Open Educational Resources;
- Laboratory activities provided according to the alternative didactic method of serious play, aimed at learning techniques and practices of emerging strategy making in complex, uncertain, and “disruptive” contexts such as those that have suffered natural disasters.
